PAVE QSE Principles of Surgery Study Guide (2027)
Principles of Surgery is one of nine subcategories in Domain 1, Foundations of Veterinary Medicine, of the AAVSB's 2027 Qualifying Science Examination (QSE) outline. It tests the reasoning behind any operation: sterilizing instruments, preparing skin, choosing suture and needle, deciding whether a wound can be closed, and managing drains, bandages and perioperative antimicrobials across species. The AAVSB does not publish question counts per subcategory; the official figure is the domain weight, 54 of the 155 questions in the 2027 outline. Study it as a short list of rules with a reason behind each one, then test yourself on cases.
This guide is part of our QSE study guides by subject and expands the surgery section of our pathology, imaging, pharmacology and surgery principles review. If you want to practice as you read, our QSE question bank mapped to the 2027 outline can be filtered by subcategory. Facts were checked against the Merck Veterinary Manual, CDC and university teaching material on 7 October 2026. navleexam.com is not affiliated with AAVSB, AVMA, ICVA or PSI.
Where Surgery Sits in the 2027 QSE
Specific procedures, such as GDV gastropexy or abomasopexy, belong with their body system in Domain 2. The outline has no separate anesthesia subcategory. Perioperative drugs most likely fall under pharmacology, and perioperative care and wound decisions under surgery. As of October 2026 AAVSB pages still describe the current exam as 200 scored plus 25 pilot questions; see our QSE 2027 format guide for that open question.
