PAVE QSE Imaging Study Guide: X-ray, Ultrasound, CT, MRI
"Principles of Imaging" is one of nine subcategories in Domain 1 (Foundations of Veterinary Medicine) of the AAVSB's 2027 Qualifying Science Examination (QSE) outline. It covers how each modality works, which one to choose, how to position and protect people, and how to read the basic signs on a radiograph or ultrasound image. Study it as a set of rules you can apply to any case, and practice with real images. The AAVSB does not publish how many questions each subcategory has; the official figure is the domain weight, 54 of the 155 questions.
This guide is part of our QSE study guides by subject and expands the imaging section of our pathology, imaging, pharmacology and surgery principles review, which has the short version (the five radiographic opacities, kVp and mAs, and a modality comparison table). Facts were checked on 7 October 2026 against the Merck Veterinary Manual, imaging articles by board-certified veterinary radiologists and the AAVSB's Study for the QSE page. navleexam.com is not affiliated with AAVSB, AVMA, ICVA or PSI.
