QSE vs BCSE: Content, Cost, Format and Which You Need
The QSE and the BCSE are the two science exams foreign veterinary graduates take on the way to a US or Canadian license. You do not choose between them directly: the QSE belongs to the AAVSB's PAVE program and the BCSE belongs to the AVMA's ECFVG program (and Canada's NEB process), so your pathway decides the exam. They are similar in length and scope but differ sharply in cost ($1,550 vs $250 as of October 2026), scheduling, passing standard, retake rules and what comes next.
This guide puts them side by side so you can see which exam you need and what preparing for it involves. If you have not yet picked a pathway, read our PAVE vs ECFVG comparison first. For QSE preparation, see our QSE practice questions mapped to the 2027 outline.
