How Long Does PAVE Take? A Realistic Timeline (2026)
For most candidates, PAVE takes about three to four years from application to certificate, and it can take longer. The fixed parts are short: the QSE is offered three times a year and results come back in about four to six weeks. The slow parts are getting a seat in an Evaluated Clinical Experience (ECE), which some schools fill 18 months ahead, and the clinical year itself, which lasts about a year. The AAVSB does not publish an average completion time, so the durations below are our estimates built from the official steps and from what host schools publish, as of October 2026.
If you are new to the program, start with our complete PAVE guide, which explains each of the four steps. This article focuses only on time: how long each step takes, where candidates lose months, and how to plan around the delays.
The PAVE Timeline at a Glance
The table shows each step, what controls its length, and a realistic range. "Published" means the figure comes from AAVSB, ICVA or a host school. "Estimate" means it is our reasoning from those published rules.
