NAVLE Study Guide

NAVLE Equine: High-Yield Topics to Study (2026 Guide)

Equine questions represent approximately 12–15% of the NAVLE — one of the highest-weighted species categories after canine and feline. It is also one of the most common weak points for students from companion-animal-heavy programs. Improving your equine performance is one of the highest-ROI moves you can make in NAVLE preparation. This guide covers every major high-yield equine topic.

Equine Colic — The Single Highest-Yield Equine Topic

Colic questions appear in almost every NAVLE administration. You need to know: the major types of colic, how to distinguish them, when to refer for surgery, and immediate management.

Types of Colic

  • Spasmodic colic (gas colic): Most common; increased gut sounds; responds well to analgesics and walking; rarely requires surgery
  • Large colon displacement: Right dorsal displacement, left dorsal displacement (nephrosplenic entrapment — detected via rectal, treated with phenylephrine + rolling + exercise), large colon volvulus (rapidly deteriorating — surgical emergency)
  • Small intestinal obstruction: Nasogastric reflux is a cardinal sign — indicates proximal obstruction or ileus. No spontaneous reflux normally. >2L reflux = significant. Surgical if obstruction confirmed.
  • Cecal tympany/impaction: Right flank distension, ping on auscultation. Medical initially; some require surgical intervention.
  • Sand colic: Horses in sandy pastures. Treat with psyllium. Auscultate for sand sounds (ventral abdomen).

Surgical vs Medical Decision

Key indicators for surgical referral: persistent pain unresponsive to analgesics, deteriorating cardiovascular status (elevated heart rate, poor peripheral perfusion, pale mucous membranes, prolonged CRT), significant nasogastric reflux, rectal findings suggesting mechanical obstruction or displacement, and failure to improve with medical management after 2–4 hours.
