The Learning Engine

Built to Make Every
Practice Session Count

Most platforms give you random questions forever. This platform tracks exactly what you know, what you don't, and directs every session accordingly — automatically.

The Cycle
How Every Session Is Decided
When you select a topic and subtopic for practice, the system checks your history and routes you to the right phase automatically.

No — ≤ 20 questions

Phase 2

Reset clears the history for this subtopic only — everything else is preserved
Phase Breakdown
What Happens in Each Phase
Phase 1
Unseen First

The system prioritizes questions you have never answered in this subtopic (since the last reset). If you request more questions than there are unseen ones, it fills the remainder with previously-seen questions at random.

Unseen questions always appear before repeats
Session size is fully customizable
Progress badge shows unseen / total count
Transitions to Phase 2 automatically once all questions have been seen
Phase 2
Wrong Answer Review

Once you have seen every question, only the ones where your most recent attempt was incorrect are served. A question exits Phase 2 as soon as you answer it correctly in a new session.

Last-attempt logic — not first-attempt
Getting it right once is enough to clear it
Button label changes to "Review Incorrect Answers (N)"
Phase 3 triggers automatically when the wrong pool empties
Phase 3
Topic Mastered

You have answered every question in this subtopic correctly at least once (since the last reset). A mastery screen appears with two choices.

Reset & Start Over — clears the slate for this subtopic only, full cycle begins again
Practice Anyway — pulls from the full pool at random, mastery state preserved
Reset count is recorded (future achievements will use this)
Other topics and subtopics are completely unaffected
Scoring
Two Ways to Calculate Your Score
Every timed exam lets you choose between linear (equal weight) and IRT-weighted (difficulty-adjusted) scoring. You pick before starting.
Linear Scoring

Every question counts equally regardless of difficulty. Score = number correct divided by number answered.

Formula:
Score = (Correct ÷ Answered) × 100
IRT Difficulty-Weighted Scoring

Harder questions are worth more. A correct answer on a hard question earns 2 points; medium earns 1.5; easy earns 1. This mirrors how real exam IRT scaling works.

Note on scaled scores: The estimated scaled score shown after every exam (425–800 for NAVLE, 580–900 for BCSE) is a linear approximation. The real exam uses full adaptive IRT scaling. The practice cutoffs are set at or slightly above the official passing threshold to encourage a confidence buffer.
The Science
Why This Approach Works
01
Active Recall
Being tested on material — not just reading it — is the single most evidence-backed study technique. Every question answered is an active recall event.
02
Error Correction Loop
Phase 2 creates a targeted error-correction loop. Seeing a question you got wrong and getting it right the next time is what converts a mistake into durable memory.
03
Mastery Confirmation
The Phase 3 milestone gives you something rare in self-study: a clear, objective confirmation that you have covered every question in a subtopic. No more guessing whether you've studied enough.
04
No Wasted Repetitions
Without the mastery cycle, every session pulls randomly — you can spend an entire session re-answering questions you already know. Phase 1 eliminates that waste by always putting unseen questions first.
05
Non-Destructive Reset
A reset does not delete your answer history. It sets a timestamp — all phase calculations simply ignore answers recorded before it. Your full history is preserved for analytics and progress tracking.
06
Species-Level Granularity
Mastery is tracked per topic + subtopic independently. Mastering Canine/Cardiovascular has no effect on your Canine/Gastrointestinal state. Each subtopic is its own clean cycle.
